Founders

Industry veterans, Dan Dubansky (President), and Dee Straub (Principal, Vice President and Chief Operations Officer), established Security Specialists, Inc. in 1999. Their goal was to offer affordable, cutting-edge security and technology options to the Greater Richmond, Virginia area. They have over 60 years of combined experience in the security and technology integration arena. Utilizing their industry expertise, Dan and Dee provide technical solutions that fulfill customer’s current needs and evolve as those needs change. Dan’s service on the Board of Directors of AIN Group, the Managing Partner of GE Home and Security Technologies, provides the Company with unique access to emerging technologies necessary to make the customized solutions for which SCOVA is known.

By working with the highest-volume builders in the industry, Dan and Dee have made Structured Cable of VA dominant in its markets. In May 2008, a second office was opened, in Williamsburg, and the corporate office relocated to a larger, newer facility. In 2014, SCOVA continued its growth by opening an office in Charlottesville. SCOVA’s wide range of professional affiliations attests to their commitment to the growth and future of the industry. From their continuous involvement with the Home Builder’s Association of Richmond since the early 1970’s, to their leadership in incorporating green processes into home design, SCOVA has proven to be a pioneer in the technology integration industry.

We believe in giving back to the communities in which we work. As a company, SCOVA regularly participates with the Make a Wish Foundation and Habitat for Humanity.

Our team members also contribute individually to many volunteer organizations. Dan served as a national board member for GE Home Technologies. He was a member of the Home Technology Alliance, a joint venture of National Association of Home Builders (NAHB)/Custom Electronic Design Association (CEDIA). Some of Dan’s past affiliations include membership on the March of Dimes board, trustee of the PAC’s of both the Home Builders Association of Richmond, and the Home Builders Association of Virginia. He was selected by Governor Charles Robb to serve on the Crime Prevention through Environmental Design committee.
Dan regularly volunteers his time and energy to support local children by gathering funds to send at-risk youth to the Richmond Police Athletic League’s (P.A.L.) summer camp. Dan’s mission to support these youths began in 2008 at Swansboro Elementary School. He read a Dr. Seuss book for a group of second grade students, but felt there was more he could contribute. After learning about the financial, educational, dietary, and family struggles some of these students face, he chose to become a group mentor. Five years later, Dan has created attainable short-term and long-term goals like getting the children involved in supervised activities after school, on weekends, and over the summer, as well as helping these students in their journeys toward college. His current challenge to himself and the community is to send fifteen more children to Richmond P.A.L. camp. Tuition is $700 per child.
